Registered businesses
Every GST-registered business has a GSTIN. Taller states have more of them.
Goods move faster
One tax meant no more stops at every state border.
22 states scrapped their tax checkposts in 2017. Trucks used to lose a fifth of every trip waiting at them.
Goods worth over ₹50,000 travel with a digital e-way bill. Volumes are up 7.7% on a year ago.
Firms no longer need a depot in every state to save tax, so they build large regional hubs instead.
Easier to do business
GST replaced 17 central and state taxes and 13 cesses. Credit for tax paid on inputs stops tax being charged on tax.
Returns, e-invoices and e-way bills run on one portal. Large firms file straight from their accounting software.
Since 22 September 2025 most goods are taxed at 5% or 18%. A 40% rate covers luxury and sin goods.

Mumbai's banks and service firms and Pune's auto plants make Maharashtra the largest GST payer by a wide margin. It collected more than Karnataka and Gujarat combined in August.
What still needs fixing
Three problems GST 2.0 hasn't solved.
Fake invoices
Shell firms bill for goods that never move, so buyers can claim tax credit they didn't earn. Officers flagged 30,162 cases in the year.
Appeals backlog
The GST Appellate Tribunal took more than eight years after launch to start hearing cases. Appeals filed by the July 2026 deadline were expected to top 2 lakh.
Tax credit gets stuck
GST 2.0 moved many products to 5% while their inputs and services often stay at 18%. Textile, fertiliser and food makers build up credit they must claim back as refunds.
